ReelSonar iBobber Wireless Fishfinder

The ReelSonar Wireless Bluetooth Smart FishFinder uses the latest sonar and smartphone technology. The castable device uses 118kHz frequency sonar and syncs via Bluetooth Smart Sync with your phone up to one hundred feet away, displaying the fish-finding data right on your smartphone screen.

For our latest fishing trip, we used the ReelSonar iBobber Portable Sonar FishFinder. I must admit that it is a pretty cool device. Of all of the castable Fishfinders I have tried out, the ReelSonar Wireless Bluetooth Smart FishFinder is the best. The biggest bonus of a castable fish finder is that it syncs with our smartphones and makes use of technology that we already carry everywhere. However, there are several other features that make the ReelSonar iBobber an outstanding value.

The free fishfinder app that comes with the purchase of the iBobber is also Google Watch and iWatch compatible. The unit has an internal memory back up system and an interactive map which allows you to GPS tag. The iBobber also allows you to share information like waypoints on social media, a feature that my brother loves.

The ReelSonar iBobber Wireless Bluetooth Fishfinder Display

The Castable Fishfinder’s app display is very minimalistic, but the more I used it, the more I appreciated the simplicity of the fish icons that are color-coded by size and the structure /vegetation images that clarify the bottom contours.

The ReelSonar iBobber displays the fish depth and it allows you to choose between the fish tagging view and the raw data sonar view, but I found myself drawn to the ease of the icons.

It has a high contrast display design with an anti-glare setting and provides a wide variety of information in addition to the fish size, depth, and bottom contours.

This ReelSonar Wireless Bluetooth Smart Fish Finder displays tide/lunar data, solar information, and weather. It also offers a trip log allowing you to keep extremely detailed records of time, date, location, water temperature, and species of fish.

The package comes with the iBobber fishfinder, an AC charger, a USB charger, the manual, and a carrying pouch.

PROS and CONS

Pros

  • The castable iBobber FishFinder display is incredibly easy to read and offers a great deal of useful information.

  • If you are used to or prefer raw sonar data, the app allows you to see that view.

  • The iBobber detects fish and structure up to 135 feet below the surface.

  • The FishFinder works on a rechargeable battery that has ten hours of battery life. This makes it good for a full day of fishing.

  • The average recharge time after the initial charging is two hours

  • The LED beacon, fish alarm, and strike alarm makes the unit “visible” even in the dark or under ice.

  • The 2 inch, 1.7 ounce unit is quite light and easily castable over long distances.

  • The ReelSonar iBobber can be used in fresh or saltwater, during the day or night, and even for ice fishing.

Cons

  • There are some concerns about the accuracy of the data. I found the data to be accurate, but some have said that at times that the iBobber app displayed erroneous readings.

  • Like with most castable devices, the ReelSonar iBobber, has the possibility of losing sync with your smartphone. This happened every fourth or fifth cast in my observation. Simply reeling in and recasting fixes the problem.

Conclusion:

Castable Fishfinder devices are ideal for shore, kayak, or ice fishing. The ReelSonar iBobber Portable Sonar FishFinder is one of the best castables that I have encountered. From the ease of casting to the ease of reading the display, the unit is user-friendly for all types of fishermen. Its price also makes it accessible.
